Katie Jacobsen Named Beartooth Electric's 2018 Washington D.C. Youth Tour Representative

Red Lodge, MT – Each year, Beartooth Electric sponsors a student from our service area for the Washington D.C. Youth Tour. This year’s winner, Katie Jacobsen, daughter of Bruce and Jennifer Jacobsen of Belfry, will represent the co-op on the 2018 trip planned for June 8-15. Katie is a junior at Red Lodge High School.

Sponsored by electric cooperatives across the nation, the Youth Tour is an opportunity for 1,500 students annually to travel to our nation’s capital and learn how cooperatives work, visit museums and historical sites and participate in National Youth Day.  The 25 students from Montana will also meet with and ask questions of Sens. Steve Daines and Jon Tester and Rep. Greg Gianforte.

This year’s essay contest required students to answer the following question:  “Electric cooperatives offer various opportunities to young people, such as scholarships, job shadowing, electrical safety programs and sponsorships. What are some innovative ways your electric cooperative can connect with young people, especially with children and teens?

In her essay, Katie identified that staying in touch with students is a challenge, as most require consistent and interactive experiences to stay “in the loop.” She concluded her essay by stating, “I believe that there are many ways Beartooth Electric can connect with the youth--through developing an exciting and engaging newsletter, bringing a representative into classrooms and using social media to target and improve the connection with youth.”

We congratulate Katie for writing such an insightful essay on innovative ways to connect with youth,  earning her the opportunity to represent Beartooth Electric in this year’s Washington D.C. Youth Tour.
