Merger “dead”, BEC look for new manager

The meeting with Beartooth Electric Cooperative, Inc. (BEC) and Lower Valley Electric’s (LVE) board chair Rod Jensen was a surprise to many since it was supposed to focus on consideration of the new standalone report. It had the twist of part of the decision already being made for the immediate future by LVE declaring its intent to pull out of management and basically declaring the merger dead for now. 

An Independent Beartooth Electric

Red Lodge, MT – Beartooth Electric Cooperative has initiated steps to end its management by Lower Valley Energy. At the January 31 meeting of the Beartooth Board of Trustees in Red Lodge, Rod Jensen, chairman of the Lower Valley Energy Board, officially gave notice of Lower Valley Energy’s (LVE) exit from the management services agreement. The exit clause of the agreement requires six months notice, so LVE will continue management until July 31, 2017, or until a new Beartooth manager is ready for them to leave.

Co-op to Terminate BEC Management

Citing a difference in perspectives, Rod Jensen, Lower Valley Energy Cooperative, Inc. (LVE) Chair announced at the Tuesday, Jan. 31, Beartooth Electric Cooperative, Inc. (BEC) board meeting in Red Lodge that they were notifying BEC they will terminate management in approximately six months on July 31, 2017. It was a dramatic announcement as the BEC board waited for Jensen’s late arrival at the office in a winter snowstorm.

When Cooperative Finance Corporation, (CFC), the financial analyst hired by Beartooth Electric Cooperative, Inc. (BEC) recently delivered its financial update on the co-op to the Board, it had positive facts to share. 

Strong BEC turns away from merger

“The Board of Trustees has shifted their focus to a full analysis of maintaining BEC as an independent, standalone cooperative,” announced a Monday, Dec. 1, Beartooth Electric Cooperative, Inc. (BEC) press release.  After a significant turning point following the Nov. 17 board meeting, the board appeared to have changed course away from merger. Several factors were at play.

Electric co-op seeks feedback

A survey completed last month shows members of the Beartooth Electric Cooperative are more satisfied with their rural utility than they were four years ago.

In customer satisfaction ratings, the co-op improved over survey results in 2012. Although many of the members of the co-op are in Montana, there are still a number of members in Park County.
